Breakfast
Breakfast is a simple affair in Brazil: coffee, milk, bread and jam, sometimes cheese and ham, with fresh fruit. My favorite: papaya! In Belém do Pará I also had mangoes and a wonderful avocado cream. In Recife, a tasty, salty grilled cheese (queijo de coalho) I had never eaten before. In Rio, it's also available in certain restaurants and at the beach, kind of a recent fad.
Lunch & Dinner
Whether at home or in a restaurant, meals are sacred: a time to eat, but also to share precious moments with family and friends. Now, here's a Brazilian custom I miss enormously: a decent, sit-down, leisurely-paced lunch and/or dinner. To this day, I have to keep reminding myself... "what's the big hurry?"... and I confess that one of the things I look forward to, when I go to Brazil, are the "family" meals. We have a joke that, if you see people sitting around a table in the US, having lunch for longer than 1/2 hour, it must be a business lunch...And also, this abominable thing of sitting at your desk or in your cubicle, eating lunch while you work is incomprehensible to most Brazilians, who leave their offices to eat with their colleagues and friends in restaurants and cafés. You guessed, lunch is usually a more substantial meal than in the U.S.
For lunch and, depending on the location, also dinner, Brazilians have wonderful, inexpensive restaurants where home-style meals are sold buffet-style by kilo. You just pile the food on your plate and someone will weigh it for you. The same goes for desserts. You order drinks from your waiter and pay him at the end of your meal.
Dinner is served much later than in the U.S. In the big cities, children are a common sight in restaurants at night, since Brazilians will take their kids out to dinner at all hours. As a result of this and the traditional Sunday lunches, Brazilian kids learn table manners and etiquette at an early age. For many of my Brazilian friends (in Recife and Porto Alegre, for instance) dinner is a lighter meal of café au lait, bread, cheese and cold cuts. So expect either type of meal.
Lanchonetes & Lojas de Sucos
When you stop to eat at a lanchonete (snack bar) or at a juice bar like this one, stand around until you finish your food. It's NOT OK to eat on the go...As a rule, Brazilians do not eat while walking down the street or while riding the bus or the subway. Also, they will not have coffee cups and drinks in their cars. They do enjoy stopping at a juice bar or a kiosk for a sandwich and a glass of freshly-squeezed juice, but will stand around until all the food is consumed (even if it's a food cart on the street in Ipanema!). Brazilians find it rude to eat in places that are not MEANT for that...(Usually, they'll have tiny bags of popcorn at the movies, but that's that. It's quite a novelty when you first arrive in the U.S. and find out you can pork out in the movie theaters. On the other hand, all the better theaters have marvelous cafés where you can get fresh pão de queijo and other Brazilian delights.)
Brazilians drink small - but potent - cups of coffee all day long, at lanchonetes and juice bars. We even have a page dedicated to the traditional Brazilian cafezinho.
There are also a lot of lanchonetes that specialize in esfihas, quibes, and other yummy savory stuff of Middle Eastern origin.
Utensils
Brazilians will usually use a fork and knife for pizza, open sandwiches, and even chicken. They are amused and even amazed at the American way of eating such foods with their hands. The fork is held in the left hand and the knife in the right (unless you're a leftie, of course). I still eat that way while my friends across the table will keep switching the fork from one hand to the other...

27Hahaha, Sica we're all taking a vaca to Brazil
Atox I was raised the say way, my family always sat down every night and ate dinner together, and we still do when we're in the same place now. When I have a family I'll raise them the same way, but when I'm living away from my fam it's basically eat whenever you're hungry.. not good! I hate the whole constantly on the go attitude as well
28
Night chica! I'm going to read the rest of the post now!
29same here karma, my family WILL eat at the dinner table...no tv, just food and talk
bye sica
30Exactly Atox, no tv and no junk! My parents always made us healthy meals every night and we very rarely had anything like pizza. Always lots of veggies, lean meats, etc.
Sica I remember reading about some of this in the Spanish classes I took. They compared American lifestyles and talked about how fast paced American culture is compared to South American and Spanish cultures. Also how meals are used not only for eating but also to sit around, enjoy the company of family and friends, talk, etc.. I love that! I can imagine that it would be quite a shock traveling to the States and seeing Americans rushing around eating burgers and fries on the go
And PS, I have 'The Girl From Ipanema' stuck in my head now, I ♥ that song!
31Sica its like Spain, just like spain. They have 2 hour lunches and they take for ever. Then they have coffee and chat even more. I hate it because they wont leave the restaurants and you have to wait forever to get a table. In 2 hours a US restaurant can easily move 3 lunch parties per table, in Spain you have one party per table cuz they take so damn long to eat! LOL
They also have 3 course lunches, a startes, a second plate and then dessert and later coffee. They also dont eat while walking, my BF is from Seville and one time we went to buy chicken and I took a drumstick out and started eating it. He was shocked!! hahahahaha. I told him that in NYC that is common and he told me that in Spain absolutely no one eats while walking or standing up.
Here in Spain they also use all their utensils and Ive seen people eat pizza with knife and forks... I think thats ridiculous, finger food is finger food. I eat chicken and pizza with my hands.
Dinner time is also very late, in Spain dinner is a 10 PM at night and it goes on to 12 Midnight. This is because of the huge lunch break in the middle of the day so they push everything to end of the day.
TV Prime time is 10PM to 1AM, in the US TV prime time is 8PM to 11PM. I really hate this though because it leaves you with no free time. IN the US you work from 9 to 5 or 6OM. so YOu can then do whatever you want, go to the gym, shop or whatever. Here you work from 9 to 2 then a 2 hour lunch and you work again from 4 to 7. You get home quite late and you have no social life. But the Spaniards love this and they stay up very very late til like 1 and go to work all tired.... It's very dumb and I hate it.
Children are also up very lae hanging with the parents in bars and restaurants. I guess they train them young so they get used to it LOL. A lot of south american countries are like this, I guess the Spanish custom is still alive from way back when they took over.
32Wow, thanks for sharing. I thought they had big lunches but light dinners. Late dinners aren't that healthy are they? I like to sit and talk and have a relaxing meal, but two hours in a restaurant for lunch would get to me.

33Oh, that's so nice yayi, thanks for sharing!
Here we eat pizza and chicken with fork and knife, sometimes with hands but only at home, don't you use your hands on a restaurant, it's completely impolite here. hehehe.
Our TV Prime is juts like USA, from 8pm to 11pm, that's the soap opera time, we love it!
Here in São Paulo, I don't know about the others states, but here we usually work from 8am to 6pm with 1 hour for lunch.
I think I work too much hahaha

Jinxy, the Myth Busters busted the myth about eating late and gaining weight. They said that is false, that as long as you eat the allowable calories per day (2,000) it doesnt matter at what time you eat them LOL.
You gain weight if you go over those calories no matter at what time you eat them.
35I can't stay 2 hours on a restaurant neither. I arrive, I sit, I order, I eat, I go away...That's enough for my lunch. But sometimes on the weekend when we go to some pizzaria or churrascaria, we stay there talking and drinking, it's fun.

So if you guys have time to eat dinner early, why is it so late?
Sica, how the hell do you eat a chicken drumstick with a fork and knife??? Its almost impossible to get to the meat.
37I haven't seen all the Mythbusters, but I do love them. Thats great to know, I won't feel guilty eating while watching televison anymore!

38Sica, the spanish channels in the US called Telemundo and Univision all they do is air soap operas all day long! Hispanics love soaps, they live on that.
They start soaps at 2 in the afternoon to 4, then they give varierty shows and the news. Soaps start again from 7PM to 11PM hahahahahaha. They play up to 7 soaps per day. There is this one channel called Telefutura on cable that starts soaps at 10 in the morning and goes all day hahahhaa
39Yeah Jinxy enjoy babe! as long as you dont go overboard you can eat at 2AM hahahaha
40I have dinner watching the soap opera most of times, at 9pm, when I'm at home. Yesterday for example I went to the mall and had dinner at 7pm, it depends of the day, but most of people that I know, have dinner before 10pm. It's incredible how the soap operas are important here, hehehe, most of people have dinner watching it and then they go to bed after it. It's fun but it's true.

The most famous soap operas here, it's from Globo TV, they air 4 soap operas during the day, one at 2pm, 1 at 6pm, then 7pm and the last and always most famous one, at 8h30 pm...people are fascinated about it here.. hahaha

Yeah Brazil makes some great soap operas, it takes a while to dubb and bring them to the Spanish TV channels but when they do, people love them.
I also like Columbian and Venezuelan soaps, Mexico makes the most soaps but I dont like theirs, they are always the same.
43LOL yayi, I don't like Mexican soaps neither, I just love one, La Usurpadora, hahahah, have you watched it?

Yeah!!! hahahahahah I saw that 4 years ago and LOVED It!!. Gabriela Spanic is my favorite actress. She is venezuelan and I started watching her waaaaaaay back when she started in Venezuelan soaps. She then married another actor called Miguel de Leon and they moved to Mexico because Venezuela went through a tough time and they all went to work in Mexico.
They got divorced and her career ook off whike his went down. BTW he has a small part in La Usurpadora, he plays this grouchy rich man with a mansion and 2 mean dogs.... Have you seen him yet? I think he falls in love with her and helps her out in the soap. I just dont remembe if its the good or the bad twin.
45Yeah hahaha, I remember that his name was Maldonado. HAHAHAHA
Fernando Calunga is so hot, is he gay?

Yeah Fernando is gay LOL
49if a guy is too pretty it's very likely that he'll be gay... but who cares, still is a pretty thing to look at! hehehee
